Chicago business school names Indian-American as dean

Indian-origin Stanford University Professor Sunil Kumar has been named dean of the prestigious Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago.

Kumar's five-year term as dean at Chicago Booth will begin on 1st January, 2011.

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore alumnus is currently Stanford Business School's senior associate dean for academic affairs.

"I am excited to become dean of Chicago Booth. I share the school's passion for the pursuit of ideas that hold up under careful scrutiny.I look forward to helping strengthen and enhance Booth's outstanding research environment and its rigorous, discipline-based approach to business education," Kumar said.

Kumar's appointment comes within a month of IIT alumnus Nitin Nohria taking over as dean of the prestigious Harvard Business School.

Kumar, 42, succeeds Edward A Snyder, who completed nine years as Chicago Booth's dean on 30th June.

"We are delighted that Sunil Kumar has agreed to serve as dean. He brings the right blend of vision, entrepreneurial energy and academic leadership that will build on the contributions of Chicago Booth at a time of tremendous momentum and achievement," University President Robert Zimmer said.

He has published dozens of scholarly research articles and has served as the editor of the Stochastic Models area of the journalOperations Research.

He also was named Professor of the Year at the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad.

"We are confident that Kumar's vision, integrity, intelligence, energy, and commitment will ensure that Chicago Booth continues its positive momentum. We expect that under his guidance Booth will reach an even higher level of achievement and recognition," said John Huizinga, the Walter David Fackler Distinguished Service Professor of Economics. India successfully test-fires interceptor missile

India successfully test-fires interceptor missile

Indiaon Monday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed interceptor missile, capable of destroying any in-coming hostile ballistic missile, from theIntegratedTestRangeatWheelerIslandoff Orissa coast.

Aimed at developing a full-fledged multi-layer Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, the trial was carried out from two launchsites of ITR off the Orissa coast, defence sources said on Monday.

The whole exercise is to achieve the desired result with precision, said a senior defence scientist.

The target missile, a modified surface-to-surface 'Prithvi' was first lifted off from a mobile launcher at10:05 amfrom the launch complex-3 of ITR at Chandipur-on-sea, 15 km from Balasore.

The interceptor "AAD" missile, positioned atWheelerIsland, about 70 km across sea from Chandipur getting signals from radars tracked it a few minutes later and than intercepted at a definite altitude in the mid-air over the sea, the sources said.

While the test launch of both target and hit missiles were deemed success from their respective test sites, detailed results, specifically the 'kill' effects of the interceptor will be known after all data analysis from multiple tracking sources, a defenceofficial said soon after both the missiles roared into the overcast sky leaving behind a thin layer of smoke.

An "AAD" missile was used as interceptor at low altitude, the sources said, adding that the indigenously developed new hypersonic interceptor missiles was designed to be engaged in endo and exo atmospheric condition.

The interceptor designed for endo-atmospheric condition (up to 30 km altitude) is a seven-metre-long and single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile, equipped with an inertial navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activatortotally under command by the data up-linked from the sophisticated ground based radars to the interceptor.

Similarly, the interceptor designed for exo-atmospheric condition is a two-stage missile with a maximum interception altitude of80 km, they said.

The interceptor missile had its own mobile launcher, secure data link for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities and its own radars.

This is the fourth time that the DRDO has tested its intercepting missile. The three previous tests were conducted on27thNovember 2006,6thDecember 2007and6thMarch 2009fromWheelerIsland.

The fourth test which was scheduled in mid-March was put-off twice and considered abandoned.

Due to some technical snags in the sub-system of the missile, the mission was aborted prior to take off on 14thMarch.

The next day the target missile deviated from its pre-determined trajectory, which forced the scientists of DRDO to put-off the trial of the interceptor missile, the sources said.

As a safety measure, the Balasore district administration had temporarily shifted about 400 civilian families residing within two km radius of the ITR launch pad-3 at Chandipur from where the target missile was test fired.(DD-26.7)

RBI hikes short term rates

RBI hikes short term rates to tame inflation

The Reserve Bank has raised its short-term lending and borrowing rates by 0.25 pc and 0.50 pc respectively to bring inflation to6 pc by March 2011 from double digits now, but the move would put pressure on banks' interest rates.

In its monetary review, the central bank, however, kept its cash reserve ratio (CRR), the cash which banks are required to keep with RBI, unchanged.

The RBI raised upwards the inflation target from 5.5 percent to six percent and said that economy will grow by 8.5 percent, up from earlier projection of 8 percent, this fiscal.
The increase in short-term lending rate (repo) to 5.75 percent and short-term borrowing rate (reverse repo) to 4.5 percent will be effective immediately.

Earlier this month, RBI had hiked repo and reverse repo rates by 0.25 percent as inflation remained above 10 percent for the fifth month in succession.

Prior to this, RBI had raised thrice its key rates, since January.

"Inflationary pressures have exacerbated and become generalised with demand side pressures clearly visiblegiven the spread and persistence of inflation, demand-side inflationary pressures need to be contained," the RBI said.

Mithali, Jhulan top women's ICC ODI Rankings

Indian players retained their numero uno status in the International Cricket Council's ODI Women's Rankings with Mithali Raj leading the batting chart and Jhulan Goswami heading the bowling list issued on Wednesday.

Mithali has 823 ranking points at an average of 49.83 while Jhulan has 777 points averaging 21.66.

In batting chart, which did not see much change, England's Lydia Greenway climbed six places to eighth while New Zealand captainAimee Watkins rose 10 places to claim 11th spot.
Australia Shelley Nitschke and England's Claire Taylor sit pretty on second and third position respectively.

In the Rankings for ODI bowlers, England's Katherine Brunt, currently ranked second, only has 23 points between her and Jhulan and the 25-year-old will only need a few wickets to displace the Indian from the top spot.
For Brunt, who completed England's five-match series against New Zealand with series figures of 9-197, it is her career-best ranking to date.
In the process of climbing to second, she has pushed Australia's pair of Shelley Nitschke and Lisa Sthalekar into third and fourth place respectively.
Another English player Jenny Gunn returned to the top 10 bowlers for the first time since March 2009, claiming ninth position.
The fast bowler had a strong series against New Zealand, including a five-wicket haul in the third ODI.

The Rankings for ODI all-rounders is currently topped by Australian Shelley Nitschke amassing 515 points.(SS-21/07)
